While the career transition process can ultimately be rewarding, it’s still a tough process. And it’s easy to get de-engergized. So, here are 10 things that can vitalize or revitalize your job search.
- Your job search can’t be your whole life. If it is your anxiety will show through. Keep it in perspective by getting exercise, going on a vacation, helping others, learning something new, getting involved, etc
- Preserve your energy. This process can easily sap your energy. One rejection or unreturned phone call can take the life out of you. When you feel the energy, hit it hard. When you don’t, do something else to get you recharged.
- Recognize yourself for activities, not the result. You can’t control whether or not someone will return your phone call, but you can decide if you make the phone call. Keep track of your activities and then congratulate yourself for doing them.
- Let networking be fun. Reach out to old friends. Take a class. Volunteer. Set a goal of meeting someone new everyday.
- Link In – This social media place has become a monster job search tool. Take the time to learn about it’s intricacies and then use it.
- Power of Three - Understand the three things that makes differentiates your offer different and then practice how to tell the world about what makes you unique.
- Your resume, your brand - Job search is a marketing process, so make your resume a a marketing brochure that highlights your offer, not a piece of paper that displays a littany of things you have done.
- Keep your network updated on your progress - Every once in a while, send your network an email to update them on your job search. Don’t let them forget about you.
- Direction, Offer, The World - The three most important components of the job search – clarity about what you want to do (and why), your offer and telling the whole world that you are looking.
- 70/20/10 rule - job search is a people game, not a technology game. 70 % of your time should be spent connecting with people; 20 % chasing recruiters and 10% on your laptop. Investing in people create the best chance for a return.
